Top Three Hypermiling Tips to Improve Overall Miles per Gallon
Today, the American economy is currently suffering. Although there are many factors which contribute to our economic crisis, one of the most important includes our unnecessarily high utilization of foreign oil and resources. However, we can take action. Hypermiling describes manipulating how you handle your vehicle as a means of improving fuel economy. Anybody can become a Hypermiler by following three very important tips.
First, you must re-structure the way you approach about driving. Keep updated on road and traffic conditions. This will allow you to choose the easiest, clearest route to your destination. Planning ahead may reduce your frequency of stopping and accelerating on your trip. If possible, take a freeway rather than local roads. You can avoid stop signs, red lights, and you will arrive at your destination sooner.
Second, drive as if you have no breaks at all. Breaking excessively greatly reduces your overall miles per gallon. In order to avoid this unnecessary use of energy, prepare for a stop as soon as you see a slowing of traffic or a red light in the distance. By the time you approach the slow down, you will probably be at a speed which doesn’t require the use of your breaks at all. Driving “without breaks” will also make you more careful and aware of your surroundings, which, in turn, will make your overall trip much safer for yourself and your road mates.
Third, use your accelerator wisely. Note that accelerating extremely slowly burns almost as much energy as punching the accelerator. You must find a comfortable medium wherein you are accelerating at a moderate level. When driving on the freeway, consider hanging out with the trucks. In traffic that is largely stop-and-go, you may notice that the majority of trucks coast at a steady speed. Stick with those guys, and you’ll be sure to improve your overall miles per gallon. Avoiding the constant switching between your gas and accelerator in stop –and-go freeway traffic is a great method of hypermiling and it will also improve the fuel economy.
